Individual dimensions for your server room container
Even the selection of the appropriate container size – ISO standard containers in 20-foot (20ft. / TEU) or 40-foot (40ft. / FEU) or individual dimensions – must be just as well thought out as the selection of the appropriate location itself.
Standard ISO containers can be easily transported by normal trucks, freight trains or container ships if required, but individual formats are usually also mobile.

A data center container, optionally in ISO or non-ISO dimensions, houses the active IT systems and the entire physical infrastructure – UPS, air conditioning and fire protection.
The costs for setting up a container data center can be planned precisely because there are no surprises due to the existing building fabric. Modular expansion is quickly possible if required. The physical infrastructure components are also modularized and thus optimally adapted to actual requirements.
To make optimum use of the space in the ISO containers, the racks are mounted on smooth-running rails. This means that they can be moved during maintenance work in the Mobile Data Center while the system is in operation. The wider non-ISO containers offer sufficient space for maintenance work even with fixed racks.
You can not only buy data center containers from EDP, but also rent or lease them. A rental solution is ideal for interim solutions during building conversions, for temporary load peaks or even for mobile roadshows. Just a few days after placing the order, the rented modular data center can start operations.
The container data center is equipped with the following infrastructure:

- 2 x power supply strips per rack with 16 A each and SNMP management for monitoring

- UPS with a power of 20 kW with an autonomy time of about 8 minutes at full load.

Individual equipment for data center containers
The interior of the DataCenter Container is usually freely configurable. In addition to racks for the IT hardware, air conditioning, UPS, fire detection/extinction, power supply/distribution, protection against physical hazards and monitoring are important topics in the planning.

The challenge
The premises of the existing Siemens Mobility AG data center had to make way for another use. However, the planned new building will not be completed for another 4-5 years. Therefore, an interim solution was needed that nevertheless promises full functionality. The container solution was the perfect choice for this.
The solution
The container used is mobile, weatherproof and provides 90 minutes of resistance to fire. The container contains a complete data center with extinguishing system, UPS, air conditioning system, electrical distribution, monitoring systems and space for four racks.

Project history
The initial request from Siemens Mobility AG was made in May 2021. After an initial cost estimate, the final bid was submitted in July 2021 and the contract was awarded in August 2021.
This was followed by delivery and placement of the container in November 2021. The container had to be placed in an existing factory building, which posed a certain challenge due to the structure of the building.
After successful installation, the container could be put into operation in December 2021. Thus, it took just seven months from the inquiry to the commissioning.
Conclusions and outlook
With the mobile data center container from EDP, the perfect solution was finally found for the temporary needs of Siemens Mobility AG. This means that a fully functional data center is now available until the new data center building is completed.
A room-in-room solution is being sought in the planned new data center building. The container is then to be put to another use, such as a backup data center.
