Digital archiving

Data archiving is a necessary backup of selected data for a certain period of time. Typically, this data is no longer needed in daily operations and can therefore be deleted after archiving on the source system. Access is rarely necessary and not time-critical.

The user is responsible for structuring the data. It is advisable to group several related small files together and to give them “speaking” names to facilitate later retrieval. Also, be aware that file formats must be interpretable years later, so use widely available, non-specialized formats.

Primary data should be retained for ten years for backup purposes.
